Introduction to Tritaal

Tritaal is the main and one of the most important taal in Hindustani music. Kathak starts with

tritaal.

a. Matras in tritaal: There are 16 matras in tritaal.

b. Parts in tritaal and matras in each part: There are 4 parts in tritaal & 4 matras in each

part.

c. Talis (claps in tritaal) & matras on which they are shown: There are 3 claps in tritaal.

They are clapped on 1st, 5th, and 13th matras.

d. Khalis in tritaal and matras on which they are shown: There is only one khali which is

shown on the 9th matra.

e. Jati of tritaal: The jati of tritaal is chatushra jati.
